Daytop New Jersey residents harvest their first vegetables of the season from the garden
they planted (green beans and beets, pictured). This is a great opportunity for students
to get their hands dirty in the soil of the earth, watch and support the growth of something
from a small seed and to give back to the community, as the vegetables are used not only at DaytopNJ but also donated to local soup kitchens and women’s shelters.
The residents are responsible for regularly watering and weeding
the garden and take much pride in their work. The core group is usually five residents with others periodically volunteering their time.
“Planting and watering the vegetables is really cool because this is not
something I would have ever gotten to do at home, and I actually really liked it” – DaytopNJ resident
